Schleswig-Holstein Postal Laws
Search, browse, correct OCR and annotate the postal ordinances collection, 1756–1866.
Historical context
This collection documents the postal administration of Schleswig-Holstein across a period of exceptional political and commercial change. The material spans the world of royal ordinances, duchy administration, carriage posts, mounted posts, ferries, tariffs, official correspondence, newspapers and cross-border communication between Denmark, the duchies, Hamburg, Lübeck and neighbouring territories.
Postal systems at this time were not simply delivery networks. They were instruments of government, commerce, intelligence and public order. Changes to rates, routes, exemptions and reporting duties reveal how information moved through the region before and during the age of railway expansion, constitutional dispute and the conflicts that eventually reshaped Schleswig-Holstein in the nineteenth century.
